“Why would we discuss Zidane when there is no job?” – Man Utd source tells BBC Sport

Manchester United are reportedly not looking to replace Jose Mourinho as manager amid speculation linking former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane with the job.

Mourinho has come under fire this week after his side’s loss to Brighton at the weekend, with the manner of the performance deemed unacceptable by a number of travelling fans.

While Mourinho and his players will look to silence the detractors when they face Tottenham on Monday night, it remains to be seen how the situation develops off the pitch if the club’s hierarchy is indeed planning a possible change.

However, BBC Sport have reported that Mourinho still has the backing of Manchester United, with their sources suggesting that they wouldn’t even need to talk about Zidane given there is no position available.

“Why would we discuss Zidane when there is no job?”, the source is quoted as telling BBC Sport, while the Manchester Evening News have noted Zidane is the favourite to replace Mourinho.

The Frenchman led Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League triumphs before stepping down at the end of last season.

There is a view amongst some that Zidane would get the best out of United’s attacking players, such as Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. They have all struggled to produce consistently under Mourinho’s reign as manager.

Nevertheless, it all appears mere speculation at this point. United have yet to brief information to anyone that they’re considering a managerial switch, so Mourinho’s job is safe for now and even if it wasn’t, I’m not sure Zidane would do much better.
