Wes Brown has criticised Anthony Martial for failing to deliver at Manchester United.
The France international looks like he’s headed through the Old Trafford exit before the current transfer window shuts.
Martial has been linked with a potential move to Premier League rivals Chelsea or Spurs, while Bayern Munich recently distanced themselves from signing Martial because they already have enough players in his position.
That didn’t cross United’s mind in January when Alexis Sanchez was brought in to boost Mourinho’s attack, which suggests the manager isn’t too bothered about losing the France international.
Moreover, the 22-year-old has struggled to hold down a starting spot under Mourinho.
Former United defender Brown offered a blunt verdict on Martial’s current situation at Old Trafford.
“I like Anthony Martial. I think he’s a great talent and he’s young. But he’s not been playing so maybe he and the manager don’t get on and maybe he’s not listening to what the manager is asking,” said Brown, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“Ultimately that’s what the players have to do. You have to listen to your manager. He didn’t play many times last year so looking from the outside it doesn’t look good. He might be off.
“If someone is having a kid then you like to think the manager would say ‘yeah, you can go for that’ and if it was me I’d want to go. But I’d have come straight back.”
Brown is spot on with his assessment of Martial’s rift with Mourinho. He hasn’t listened or took orders from the boss and that’s always going to create an issue between player and manager. Unfortunately, it seems too late for a U-turn of any significance.
Mourinho has signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, FC Porto full-back Diogo Dalot and veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant to improve our squad ahead of the new season.
