Mourinho and Woodward set for crunch talks as doubt surrounds Martial’s future

Jose Mourinho and executive vice-president Ed Woodward are reportedly at odds over the future of Anthony Martial in this transfer window.

The Frenchman didn’t get a call-up to the 23-man World Cup squad that won football’s most prestigious tournament and it is thought he puts part of that down to the lack of game time he received at United last season.

We don’t quite buy into that, though. If Martial took Mourinho’s instructions better he would have featured more often and, therefore, would have been in with a better shot to be included in Didier Deschamps’ successful France side.

Martial is currently attracting interest from Chelsea, Juventus and Bayern Munich, yet ESPN claim that while Mourinho is prepared to let the 22-year-old go this summer, Woodward is more cautious about losing a player as he could blossom into a world-class talent elsewhere.

He has shown glimpses of his immense talent during his time at United but doesn’t seem an ideal fit for a conservative manager like Mourinho.

The Portuguese tactician is not unfamiliar with these situations. He previously got rid of young talents such as Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah, so it’s no wonder Woodward wants to give this a second thought.

There is no denying Martial has potential in his locker, though Mourinho seems unwilling to be part of his development.

Another report, as per The Express, states the former AS Monaco forward can leave Old Trafford, but only for £60 million and not to a Premier League rival.
