Roberto Martinez explains why Mourinho fought to keep Fellaini

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has given an insight as to why Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho fought so hard to keep Marouane Fellaini this summer.

Many fans wanted the opposite. For Fellaini to pack his bags, leave Manchester and never return.

That’s a harsh way to put it but it’s true. The midfield nuisance is about as far from being a fans’ favourite as Manchester is to New Zealand.

Many felt new signings in midfielder should be a priority as Fellaini came towards the end of his previous contract, but the 30-year-old has now signed on for a further two years.

Anyhow, Martinez is a big fan of Fellaini, who has shone for his country at this summer’s World Cup.

He’s even explained why he thinks Mourinho went against the fans and fought to keep Fellaini at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Goal, Martinez said: “I think he is player that you have to work with to appreciate what he really brings.

“As a team player he always sees that every action is the end of the world and that makes him a warrior and someone that every coach and manager would love to have in his team.”

There is nothing that can be done about it now. Fellaini’s new deal means we need to just get on with it for now and hope he can contribute to something worthwhile.

While that’s unlikely, as fans there’s no point constantly moaning. Our duty is to support the side through thick and thin.
