On This Day 1982: Man Utd legend makes World Cup history

On this day in 1982, Norman Whiteside, who had just made two competitive appearances for United, becomes the youngest ever player to appear in the World Cup; a record which had previously been held by Pele.

He made his Northern Ireland debut at the tender age of 17 years and 41 days.

Whiteside helped Northern Ireland to a 0-0 against Yugoslavia in the opening game. Further, a 1-1 draw against Honduras, followed by a 1-0 win over Spain, the host country, ensured their progression to the second stage.

Norman will always be held in high regard by the Old Trafford faithful and he still holds the record of the youngest player to score in an FA Cup final and the youngest player to score a senior goal for United.
