Arsenal legend urges club to sign controversial Man Utd midfielder

They can take him.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes Manchester United contract rebel Marouane Fellaini would be a good addition to the Arsenal squad.

The Gunners have been linked with a surprise move to sign the Belgium international this summer.

Fellaini will be available on a free transfer given his current deal with the Reds will expire in the coming weeks.

No matter where he plays, Fellaini is regarded as a controversial figure at Old Trafford because of his unflattering style of play and use of his elbows on opponents.

However, Jose Mourinho has made it clear he wants Fellaini to renew his contract and remain a United player.

Arsenal have since appointed Unai Emery as their new manager after Arsene Wenger called time on his 22 seasons in charge at the Emirates Stadium.

They’ve already signed 34-year-old Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner to their squad in a free transfer from Serie A champions Juventus.

It says a lot that Emery is targeting free transfers rather than dip into his transfer kitty should he even have one. The club ought to back their new manager in order to avoid upheaval as seen within the fanbase during Wenger’s final years.

Former Arsenal star Parlour believes Fellaini would be a good signing because he would offer the Gunners something different.

“I never really know what his best position is. He’s played as an attacking midfielder and then a holding midfielder,” Parlour told Sky Sports.

“When you look at a free transfer he’s something different. Even if he didn’t start you could bring him off the bench.

“If you’re chasing a goal you might need to play a different style of football go a little bit more direct up to the front and he’s perfect for that. ‘Certainly he’s a player where you can change the system of play. You’d say that’s a decent signing.”
