Man Utd aim to wrap up World Cup star signing this week

Stretty News understands that Manchester United would ideally like to complete the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian midfielder Fred before the end of this week.

Part of Tite’s 23 man Brazil World Cup squad, the athletic midfielder is traveling to England this week as part of their preparation for the tournament. The tournament’s favourites will face Croatia at Anfield before they depart for Russia.

Brazil’s embarrassment of riches means Fred is not necessarily a sure starter in Russia, with the likes of Fernandinho and Casemiro in the mix, but he is a valued member of the setup.

The practicalities of a deal being completed this week are seemingly in place- Geographically, as we know, it’s a short journey between Liverpool and Manchester should things get as far as conducting a medical.

We understand talks between Fred’s representative, ex-Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva, and United are at ‘an advanced stage’ which would suggest progress is being made. Fred himself has described United’s current interest and bid as ‘very strong’.

Manchester City have seemingly withdrawn their interest from January, prioritising signing Napoli’s midfielder Jorginho, who was also linked to United in recent months.

United appear keen to avoid any deal dragging out into the World Cup, meaning a swift conclusion should certainly be on the agenda.

Fred has been backed to succeed at United by his current Shakhtar manager and South American football correspondent Tim Vickery.

His arrival would certainly be welcomed.
