Jose Mourinho previously criticised Man Utd target for having ‘attitude of a child’

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho reportedly wants a reunion with West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic to add aggression and firepower to his attacking line-up at Old Trafford.

Mourinho made a similar move when he got the United job back in 2016 – albeit with a much superior player – when he signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

What’s surprising about this report, which links Arnautovic with a move to United, is when we did a bit of research it came to our attention that his relationship with Mourinho is a little strained. The fiery Austrian spent the 2009/10 season on loan at Inter Milan but made just three appearances across all competitions.

It won’t come as much of a surprise to figure Arnautovic found himself on the wrong side of the Portuguese disciplinarian.

However, there was an episode that saw Mourinho give Arnautovic his watch after he turned up for Inter training hours early to avoid another confrontation with the manager, as per Four Four Two.

But Mourinho would later describe Arnautovic as “a fantastic person with the attitude of a child” and the club would then decline to take up the option to sign him permanently from Twente, allowing him to join Werder Bremen.

The now-29-year-old scored 11 top-flight goals during his debut season with West Ham following a club-record £24 million move from Stoke City.

We can expect plenty of headlines if these two reunite this summer, but I’m not convinced he’s good enough for United.

It would be rather underwhelming to lose Martial for Arnautovic.
