Jose Mourinho’s right-hand man emerges as shock contender to replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal boss

According to The Sun, Manchester United assistant manager Rui Faria is on Arsenal’s shortlist of contenders to replace Arsene Wenger this summer.

The Frenchman is expected to step down at the end of the season after nearly 22-years in charge of Arsenal and the club are already looking at candidates to succeed Wenger.

I mean, of course they are. But they should have been drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements long ago, the same way big clubs such as Bayern Munich are usually a step ahead unless something unexpected happens.

We’ve known for years now that Wenger is finished.

However, Faria has worked with Jose Mourinho since 2001 and was promoted to become his main assistant in 2003 after initially working as a fitness coach.

The report also suggests the 42-year-old is keen on finding his feet as a manager and would be interested in speaking to Arsenal about replacing Wenger.

It would be considered a major shock if Arsenal gave Faria such a huge job without any real experience in the big seat and given their relationship with Mourinho it’s unlikely to go down well with the Emirates faithful.

The Sun also claims Faria is part of a 14-man shortlist to replace the Arsenal legend as manager.
