Transfer round-up: Mourinho to beat Guardiola to Brazil star while Roma midfielder denies talks with Premier League giants

José Mourinho wants two midfielders in the transfer window and the club are pushing to conclude a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred after Manchester City end interest. The Brazilian was expected to join Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in January, but Manchester Evening News now believe United lead the race for his signature.

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has denied he was ever close to joining Manchester, despite rumours having linked him strongly to the club especially when Louis van Gaal was manager. “No, no. There was a lot of speculation but to be honest I only spoke with Roma,” Strootman told the Independent.

United starlet Axel Tuanzebe is set to spend another season on loan at Aston Villa whether they’re promoted to the Premier League or not, report The Sun.

In an interview with Manchester Evening News, Rene Meulensteen says Sir Alex Ferguson was eyeing up three German signings before retiring: Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus.

Spanish outlet Don Balon are now reporting that United could sign Samuel Umtiti for €60 million this summer. However, as a source, they’ve linked us with pretty much everyone the past week.
