Darmian will return return to Italy, says former Torino midfielder

Matteo Darmian’s transfer from Torino to Manchester United is imminent and there is already talk of him returning to the Serie A.

This is all sounding a bit Gareth Bale for my liking but if we have half the player United are on to something special.

These comments are coming from former Torino midfielder Claudio Sala, who does not expect Darmian’s move to Old Trafford to be long term.

Sala told Tuttomercatoweb: “Recently we have seen a loss of financial competitiveness from our club who can not keep up with those overseas.

“It is regrettable that the Serie A lose a player like Darmian and that no team Italian managed to take him, but I think that sooner or later he will come back to play with us as happened with many others who have tried an experience abroad.”

Righto, Sala, you crank.

Maybe that’s harsh but if Darmian can come to United, impress and make the right back position his own I cannot see him too bothered about a return to Serie A. Even Juventus are nowhere near the size of our club and they may continue their recent run of success for the next decade or more.

Darmian, however, is seen already as an upgrade to what Louis van Gaal has at right-back. Rafael Da Silva has been overlooked with Antonio Valencia, a Ecuadorian winger, playing the role instead.

We have seen successful signings and failures from Italy down the years. Hopefully Darmian is a Gianfranco Zola and not a Alberto Aquilani.
