Nani: Portugal can win without Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo

Nani has hit out at the suggestion that Portugal are a one-man team, insisting that they can win as a team without the aid of talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, who is arguably the best footballer in the world, unless you’re of the opinion Lionel Messi is better, bagged a hat-trick last week in Portugal’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Armenia but will miss Tuesday’s friendly versus Italy after being granted an early holiday.

The Real Madrid star was permitted to take a break after a long season for club and country, with both in need of him returning next season fresh and ready to go.

However, Nani believes that Portugal, managed by Fernando Santos, can cope without their prolific captain, arguing that there is talent elsewhere in the squad that should also be recognised.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a very important player for us and he showed that in the last match,” the winger told reporters, as per Goal.

“But with or without him, we have a strong team and need to play our game and work hard to achieve good results.”

Nani is currently being linked with a move to Benfica, as per Goal, after spending a season-long loan spell at former club Sporting Lisbon from present club Manchester United.
