Paul Scholes criticised Phil Jones after England’s 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland claiming that the Manchester United defender is not good enough to play centre-back.
Jonesy has since responded by saying the comments have not concerned him one bit.
The 23-year-old started the game at right-back rather than his preferred position at centre-back which former team-mate Scholes this he is “not quite clever enough” to pull off at this level.
“I just think at centre-back, when he [Phil Jones] is playing against clever forwards, he tends to get dragged out of position quite easily.”
Jones, however, took the comments from Scholes with a pinch of salt.
“People comment all the time about individuals.
“Gone are the days when I used to take notice of what people say and react to it. It doesn’t bother me one little bit anymore.
“I am at the stage now where I can’t be considered as a young player any more. I have got to step up, keep playing well and do what I do best.”
The England international has shown a great degree of versatility since joining United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011. He is happy to play where required.
“I have played in all three [positions] now and sometimes it can be difficult going from one position to the next, but I feel comfortable at right-back.
“Obviously centre-back is where I want to be playing, but I was happy to play at right back.
“You just take it on the chin and play where you are asked to play. I know I can play in those positions.”
