Born 7 May 1965 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Norman Whiteside became a renowned footballer when he broke Pelé’s record as the youngest player to make an appearance in a World Cup, aged 17, in Spain 1982.

Whiteside made his Manchester United debut on 24 April 1982 against Brighton & Hove Albion as a substitute. He had a powerful physique and was quick-witted despite lacking in pace. When he crossed the Irish Sea to Manchester, Dave Sexton was in charge of the club.

Injuries affected Whiteside’s career massively even at a young age. The highlight of his career came during the memorable 1985 FA Cup final against Everton. Fellow-Irishman Kevin Moran became the first ever player send off in a final and Whiteside’s goal of the season (1984/85) in extra time won United the FA Cup that year.

However, knee injuries were recurring and it finally blighted Whiteside’s career. From April 1988 to April 1989, he missed a full year of football which was very difficult and damaging for the player. Sir Alex Ferguson then decided to call it a day and Whiteside was transferred to Everton for a fee of £600,000.

Norman Whiteside’s career didn’t end the way the club or he intended it to. To this day he remains a big favourite with the Old Trafford faithful and holds the status of Club Ambassador.
