Martino: Di Maria is one of the world’s best

Argentina boss Gerardo Martino firmly believes that Angel Di Maria is ‘one of the best four or five players in the world’ after the winger’s outstanding performance against Germany on Wednesday night.

Martino’s men put 4 past the world champions while only conceding half as many. Manchester United signings Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo started the game as the former scored after creating three goals.

Assists for Sergio Aguero, Erik Lamela and Federico Fernandez all came from Di Maria before he finished a beautiful chip over Germany goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller.

Speaking after the win, Martino told reporters: “Di Maria is one of the best four or five players in the world and so his performance didn’t surprise me.

“His absence there was noticeable,” the Argentina boss said in response to a question regarding the World Cup final which they lost to Germany.

A performance like tonight would blow Premier League opposition out of the water, so hopefully the new squad clicks as soon as possible. QPR will be far from an easy ride but Manchester United are crying out for their first win of the season.

Germany coach Joachim Low was less complimentary of Di Maria’s performance and was ever so reluctant to agree with Martino if the winger had been fit to play in this summer’s final.

He said: “We would have beaten them on July 13 even if Di Maria had been playing.

“He couldn’t have beaten us on that day.”

You cannot expect him to say ‘oh yeah, they would have rolled us completely over’ without being sarcastic anyway.
