VIDEO: United’s best goals of the 40s and 50s

The Second World War meant football was no longer priority between 1939 and 1946. But even without the League football, Old Trafford was an attraction.

During a German air raid, On 11 March 1941, the stadium was bombed. It destroyed the main stand, dressing rooms and offices. However within a few years, there would be optimism again around the famous old ground we still sit in to this day.

Matt Busby became Manchester United manager in 1945, initially on a five-year contract. It was the start of something special. This video captures some of the best goals fans saw in the 40s and 50s.

The Manchester United calypso
Now, football is a pleasent game,
Played in the sun, played in the rain,
And the team that gets me excited,
Is Manchester United.

Manchester,
Manchester United.
A bunch of bouncing “Busby Babes”,
They deserve to be knighted.

If ever they’re playing in your town,
You must get to that football ground.
Take a look and you will see,
Football taught by Matt Busby.

Manchester,
Manchester United.
A bunch of bouncing “Busby Babes”,
They deserve to be knighted.

They are the greatest team today,
If you don’t believe it go see them play.
The type of football, second to none,
‘Cos they’re at the top of Division One!

Manchester,
Manchester United.
A bunch of bouncing “Busby Babes”,
They deserve to be knighted.

If ever they’re playing in your town,
You must get to that football ground.
Take a look and you will see,
Football taught by Matt Busby.

Manchester,
Manchester United.
A bunch of bouncing “Busby Babes”,
They deserve to be knighted.

It’s the greatest thrill that you’ve ever seen,
They are known as a soccer machine.
They are the best, there is no doubt,
So raise a cheer and give a shout.

For Manchester,
Manchester United.
A bunch of bouncing “Busby Babes”,
They deserve to be knighted.
