Latest signing Bruno Gomes ‘is like Luis Fabiano’

Much has been speculated about our latest signing Bruno Gomes. What cannot be doubted is that Sir Alex Ferguson has come up trumps once again in utilising his vast scouting network and contacts to secure what looks like another promising Brazilian.

After hearing that Bruno is due to sign for United on his 18th birthday, I spoke to Sky’s Brazilian and Latin American football expert Paulo Freitas, who is also involved in the computer game Football Manager research team and writes for JustFootball and Samba Foot. We discussed all sorts regarding Bruno, including his background, qualities and style.

For those who do not know much about Bruno Gomes, what is his footballing background?

Bruno Gomes has previously played for the youth teams of Palmeiras and Corinthians before joining Desportivo Brasil. He doesn’t have a European passport but his father has been working to get one for him, a work permit would also be hard as Bruno Gomes is not called up for Brazilian Under 17 national team, despite his talent. There is a lot of controversy on why that happens, but Desportivo Brasil’s players in general are often overlooked, maybe due to the fact it’s a tiny club.

What are some of Bruno’s best qualities?

He is a typical number 9, he doesn’t have fantastic technique (although isn’t inept either), but his positioning is fantastic, as is his finishing ability, and his acceleration isn’t bad either. He has other qualities too as he isn’t short, can shoot from distance and his heading is decent too. So Manchester United shouldn’t expect a Neymar kind of player.

If you could compare Bruno to a player past or present, who would it be?

Bruno Gomes could be compared to his idol Luís Fabiano, or to former Napoli striker Careca, both pretty efficient number 9s, although not having the dribbling skills someone like Neymar has.

Once Bruno arrives in Manchester, can he make an instant impact or will he need time to settle?

He is only 16 and when he joins he will be 18, and will most likely lack senior football experience, so it’s not very likely he can have immediate impact. I think he will have to play a year or two at the Under 21 team before playing for the senior team.

Can Bruno become United’s next goalscoring hero?

I believe he can become a top player and thus a great striker for Manchester United too, his father does a good job running his career and Bruno Gomes seems to have a good mentality too, he is already learning English and has visited Man Utd a few times, so should adapt easily too.

My special thanks go to Paulo Freitas once again, for taking the time to answer my questions. You can follow Paulo on Twitter.

You can also welcome Bruno to Manchester United by following the player himself on Twitter.
