Alexander Buttner joins United to complete the best day of his life

Dutch full-back Alexander Buttner, known for being able to play on the left and right, has signed for Manchester United on a five-year contract until 2017.

The 23-year-old joined United from Vitesse Arnhem today after completing a medical on Monday morning and finalising personal terms later that day. He made 199 appearances over the past four years for the Eredivisie side, scoring 10 goals.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we’re delighted to sign him. He’s someone we’ve been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position.”

It appears obvious that Ferguson rates Buttner highly but I expect him to feature a couple of times for the reserves before making his first team debut. Signing a left back this summer was important with Patrice Evra againg and unable to play 35+ games each year at the same level. Sending Fabio da Silva to QPR on a season-loan made the move even more essential because Evra had no back-up whatsoever.

Alexander Buttner said: “Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life. It’s a team I have admired for many years now and I can’t wait to join my teammates and play my part in helping the club be successful.”

Ever since Fabio moved down south, Manchester United have been linked heavily with Leighton Baines. A lot of fans have been wondering what happened to those negotiations for United to move on and look elsewhere. Well, Ferguson inquired about the English left back on Friday night and was quoted £15 million. The boss didn’t agree with Everton’s valuation and signed “one of the best young left backs in Europe” instead.

Buttner will be unveiled in front of the press on Friday.
