What happened to the 40 games Hargreaves promised?

After Manchester United released Owen Hargreaves last summer the midfielder turned down various clubs to join our rivals City. Whether you kept the respect for him or not, it doesn’t matter. Hargreaves complained about the way our medical staff treated him, describing himself as some sort of ‘guinea pig’.

According to the Guardian, Owen Hargreaves will be released by Manchester City when the season comes to an end. The club apparently refused to offer the midfielder a new pay-as-you-play contact because of how previous injuries have ruined his career.

Hargreaves has only managed to make 4 appearances (just one league appearance) for City since joining them on a free transfer last summer. That’s 36 short of what he said he’d make in attempt of securing a place in England’s squad for the European Championships this summer.

On August 27, 2011 Hargreaves told the Daily Mail: “I’m going to blow people away. I’m coming back believing I can return to the level I was at before. My body feels great and my knees are perfect. I’ve just got this huge chip on my shoulder because I’ve been out for three years and people think I’m dead and buried.

“I can understand why. I can see why people would be sceptical. When I walked off the pitch after five minutes in that game against Wolves last season, people must have thought, ‘What is it with this guy? Is he made of fucking glass? Is he kidding?’ It was my first game in two years.

“But, right now, I’d like to think I can play 40 games this season and with the right care I believe I can train every day. I hope to be back in the England side for the European Championship next summer. You have to have ambition.”

So where did it go wrong? I can’t help but wonder if he’ll have a go at City’s medical staff in attempt to save his career at another club. I guess, we’ll never know what could happen with desperate social media campaigns.

  1. The name Owen must be man unison for glass, we had Michael glass )Owen) then that other waste of shirt printing Owen (glass)Hargreaves, what a pair of bookends.
