Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed his Dutch goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar after the number one revealed that he will retire from football at the end of the season.
Van der Sar joined United from Fulham in 2005 for a reported fee worth £2 million and has been a regular for The Reds ever since.
Van der Sar aged 40 is still known as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but the time has nearly come for the Dutch international to hang up his boots so that he can spend more time with his family.
Ferguson said:
Fantastic – a magnificent person, professional goalkeeper, an absolute marvellous career he’s had.
He’s an example to anyone who wants to become a goalkeeper.
He’s calm, he doesn’t look to search or press for himself, he’s happy with what he’s achieved in life and he’s not searching for anything, he’s such a good man.
