Manchester United midfield master mind Paul Scholes was only given two hours notice to decide whether to come out of international retirement and play for England in the 2010 World Cup which was held in South Africa. Scholes quit international football in 2004 and has been asked a number of times by a different managers to come back but never accepted.
Scholes was asked if two hours was enough time to make a decision,he replied:”That’s what I thought. That’s why I probably said no, not just because he had given me a couple of hours to think about it but the fact I needed a bit more time.”
So Scholes might of been in South Africa with the English squad if he had more time to make his decision. Wow, I bet there gutted they didn’t give him more time because they lacked a player of his quality in the center of the park seeing Steve.G & Frank.L didn’t do much!
“I am not saying it definitely would have been in that case but I think it might have been. I did not expect it the call. It wasn’t even on my mind.It wasn’t until a week before the tournament you start seeing all the build up and thought maybe I made the wrong decision.”
I am not saying I would have made a difference. I am just saying it was a chance to play in the World Cup and I turned it down. I don’t look back and think it didn’t go well for England because I didn’t go.
“Would I have joined up if Capello had called me?I don’t know. Maybe it might have meant more.”
I found this interesting because I thought that Scholes wouldn’t want anything to do with the English football squad because in my eyes its full of trouble makers.
