Erik ten Hag receives huge injury boost as crucial defender could return vs Brentford

Erik ten Hag has received a huge injury boost ahead of their next Premier League game, with the Reds set to make the trip to face Brentford after this month’s set of international fixtures.

United ended in perfect fashion before the domestic season was paused to accommodate the international calendar, with United recording a game for the history books in their FA Cup quarter-final clash against Liverpool.

United ended that game with a back-two of Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, pointing to United’s growing list of concerns in the centre-back position.

Jonny Evans was ruled out of the game the day before and Maguire has only recently returned from injury. Victor Lindelof has been playing at left-back to accommodate the loss of both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Now, it is being reported that Ten Hag could receive a massive injury boost, with Lisandro Martinez said to be edging closer to full fitness.

That’s according to Sky Sports News, who even claim that United are hopeful that Martinez will be fit enough to feature in the game against Brentford.

It’s explained that Martinez is currently in the USA with the Argentina side and although he is not expected to play, he will train with his team-mates as he continues to build his fitness.

Martinez has not featured for United since the win over West Ham in the first week of February, which was only the Argentinian’s fourth appearance since returning from an injury that had kept him out since September.

All in all, the former Ajax star has made just 8 appearances in the Premier League this season but he will be hoping to play a significant role in United’s push for silverware and Champions League qualification this season.

United will face Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final next month and are within reasonable distance of a top-four finish.
