Wayne Rooney compares ‘incredible’ Manchester United starlet to 2014 World Cup-winner

Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney waxed lyrical about academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, with a comparison to his former team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger.

It will surely be an honour for Mainoo, who has received lots of praise in his breakthrough season at United, to be compared to midfielder who lifted the World Cup with Germany in 2014.

United fans have every reason to be excited about the future with players like Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho breaking through, but Rooney decided to focus on the young midfielder ahead of Saturday’s 2-0 win over relegation battling Everton.

Rooney spent a brief period playing alongside Schweinsteiger after the German was signed by Louis van Gaal, and he says there are a few similarities between the two players.

“He’s been incredible,” Rooney told TNT Sports on Saturday, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “At such a young age, the maturity he shows…

“When you see young players come into any first-team, they are normally a bit raw. He reminds me of a young Bastian Schweinsteiger in the way he entices players in and always makes the right decision.

“I think he’s got a real bright future.”

In his latest Daily Briefing column for Caught Offside, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Ineos Sports group consider Mainoo and Garnacho ‘crucial’ to their long-term project at United.
