Gary Neville laughs off talkSPORT presenter’s nonsensical Nemanja Vidic claim

Gary Neville took aim at Gabby Agbonlahor after the talkSPORT mouthpiece named Nemanja Vidic as the most overrated defender in Premier League history.

The former Aston Villa captain was asked to name the best centre-backs in the Premier League era. His answers included Rio Ferdinand and John Terry – but, fresh from his debut appearance on BBC show Dragon’s Den, Neville was having none of it.

Vidic and Agbonlahor went head-to-head on a number of occasions during their playing careers, so you would think the footballer turned pundit would be in a good position to offer some insight on the matter.

Instead, it sounds like he is trying to increase engagements for talkSPORT on social media.

Agbonlahor gave notable mentions to Sol Campbell, Ledley King and Vincent Kompany but when tasked with naming the most overrated defender, former United star Vidic got the nod.

“I’ve said it before, I didn’t find Vidic hard to play against,” Agbonlahor told the talkSPORT Breakfast. “Whenever he came tight, I’d spin in behind him. I could hold the ball up against him. Other players might say different, but that’s my opinion.”

Neville has subtly responded to Agbonlahor’s claims by reposting a statistic from Stretford Paddock on X. The post read: “So Gabby Agbonlahor has said Vidic is the most overrated defender in PL history and he didn’t find it hard to play against him.

“Just a reminder that Agbonlahor played #MUFC 22 times in his career and won once, couldn’t have been that easy then.”

Ouch!

Vidic was one of the Premier League’s greatest centre-backs and I don’t think anyone takes Agbonlahor’s football opinions seriously anyway. It’s just noise in the background.

The Serb won the Premier League five times during his eight-year spell at the club, as well as the Champions League in 2008. He also played 300 times for the Reds, scoring 21 goals.

Vidic departed for Inter Milan in 2014 and has since hung up his football boots.
