18 years since George Best left us

It is 18-years since George Best passed away in London’s Cromwell Hospital.

The Manchester United legend’s memory will forever live on as he was once recognised as the best player in the world. Long before people spoke about Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Best was part of the United Holy Trinity – as you can see with the statue on the forecourt at Old Trafford – that included Sir Bobby Charlton, who we sadly lost last month, and Dennis Law. The trio were very different people but they represent history, they stood for courage, and epitomised the desire to win for Manchester United.

Best became known as El Beatle as for his charisma, good looks and sensational skill.

However, sadly, alcoholism took hold of Best’s life and he died aged 59 in 2005 following a kidney infection.

Despite his controversial lifestyle, Best somehow existed as an ethereal presence but he grew to hate the publicity. A man who was a driving force in United’s 1968 European Cup triumph, Best played a game nobody else could and lived a life few others would.

May Best, the Belfast boy, continue to rest in peace.
