Report: Undeserved loss for Manchester United U21s against Leeds

Manchester United U21s lost 2-1 to Leeds United in our first home match of the 2023/24 Premier League 2 season at Old Trafford.

The starting XI: Elyh Harrison, Habeeb Ogunneye, Marc Jurado, Teden Mengi, Sonny Aljofree, Toby Collyer, Mateo Mejia, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Joe Hugill, Hannibal Mejbri, Omari Forson. Substitutes: Jacob Carney, Maximillian Oyedele, Daniel Gore, Ethan Williams, Charlie McNeill.

The game started terribly for Manchester United as they found themselves 1-0 down after 8 minutes.

A few minutes later, Leeds had a player brought down in the penalty area. The referee pointed towards the spot before Elyh Harrison managed to deny the penalty kick. United fought on trying to make their chances count. It was Omari Forson who had the first real chance for United, but it was cleared off the line. Mateo Mejia was heavily involved once again and Isak Hansen-Aaroen had a decent attempt blocked.

Marc Jurado was busy on the flank with his crosses, and one of them found Habeeb Ogunneye, but once again United were denied the equaliser. What followed in the second half was not any different. By the hour mark, United found themselves 2-0 down. This came immediately after we created another chance through Mejia.

On the other hand, after the Leeds goal, three clear cut chances followed from the young Red. First it was Daniel Gore with a shot off the post; then Teden Mengi had a go from distance. The last to attempt was Hannibal Mejbri but it was saved.

United kept trying until the very end but nothing went through. Hansen-Aaroen was excellent throughout the game and it was a shame that his passes were not being converted into a chances. In a classic Leeds behaviour in the end, the referee awards United a free kick inside the penalty area and McNeill converts it into a goal. Later on, Sonny Aljofree was sent off for handball (second yellow) despite the play being offside. A joke!

It ends 1-2, and United are once again unlucky as they lose undeservedly.

Goalscorers: United – McNeill 90+1. Leeds – McGurk 8, Douglas 54.

  1. It’s Hilarious, when Man Utd lose its always someone else’s fault. Turned into an absolute joke of a club with a joke fan base!!!!

  2. Didn’t Leeds miss a penalty too? It could have been 1-3? So it’s a bit of a stretch to say Leeds were as lucky as this article suggests.
