Jurgen Klopp had a lot to say when Manchester United signed Paul Pogba back in 2016.
The Frenchman re-signed for United on a then-world record fee of £89.3 million (€105m), with the Red Devils keen to bring their former youth product back to Old Trafford.
It was a widely-covered move by the media, as you’d expect with any transfer on that scale, and pundits and managers alike felt the need to give their two pence on the matter across the period.
Klopp admits defeat after transfer criticism
Klopp, being as outspoken as he is, went as far as to say that deals such as Pogba’s would soon have him out of a job.
“The day that this is football, then I’m not in a job anymore. Other clubs can spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I had that money.”
Today, Liverpool have agreed a British record fee of £110m (€127m) to sign 21-year-old Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Hove Albion, outbidding Chelsea in the process ahead of their clash on Sunday.
Football fans were quick to remind Liverpool supporters of their manager’s comments and it seemingly resurfaced to the German during his press conference this morning, as he admitted (via Fabrizio Romano): “Honestly, everything has changed. Do I like it? No. But did I realise I was wrong? Yes, definitely. That’s the way it goes.”
