Report: Man Utd keep tabs on Portuguese duo ahead of possible transfers

According to reports, Manchester United scouts were in attendance to witness Benfica’s 4-0 victory over Braga this Sunday.

Portuguese publication A Bola, as cited by Sport Witness claim United officials were observing two Benfica stars; Ruben Dias and Florentino Luis.

Both players made good impressions in the game, and are said to be of interest to the Reds in the coming transfer windows.

Dias, 22, starred for Portugal in the inaugural Nations League this summer, and was linked with a move to Old Trafford after an impressive season for Benfica.

However, United eventually signed Harry Maguire at centre-back instead, with the Sun claiming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was put off signing the youngster when the release clause in his contract was increased to upwards of £80m.

Dias is one of the best young centre-backs across Europe, so it’s no surprise to hear the Reds keep an eye on him, despite having a wealth of options in central defence with the return of Axel Tuanzebe.

Luis, meanwhile, is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder who was reportedly seen by Manchester City as a potential long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

The Sun claim Benfica turned down an approach from PSG this summer for Luis, who plays in a position which is a clear area of weakness for Solskjaer.

United did not sign a replacement for Ander Herrera this summer, and Luis is an exciting young talent who could replace the ageing Nemanja Matic in the squad and play in the holding role, if he was indeed signed by the Reds.

Luis’ Benfica contract doesn’t run out out until 2023, so a high fee would no doubt be commanded for his signature.
