Man Utd transfer news: Chris Smalling ‘accepts’ shock move to Serie A

Chris Smalling is on the verge of leaving Manchester United to join Serie A side AS Roma on loan, according to reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has plenty of centre-backs to choose from after signing Harry Maguire from Leicester City in a mega-money deal this summer.

Despite that, United turned down a bid from Everton to take Smalling on loan yet an exit could still be on the cards for the England international.

And now there are reports Smalling will join Roma on loan until the end of the season – without an option to buy the defender. He could join a Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez who have both ditched Old Trafford for life in Italy (latter has left on loan).

ESPN discussed the possible transfer as seen in the video below:

Fabrizio Romano, a reliable Italian journalist who provides transfer news for Sky Sports and The Guardian, claims a deal that would see Smalling join Roma is on the verge of happening.

He wrote on Twitter (see below): “Chris Smalling to AS Roma from Man United, here we go!

“Total agreement for a simple loan (€3m to Man Utd) without buy option. The player has accepted.”
