Atletico Madrid in pole position to sign €40m midfielder, previously on Man Utd’s radar

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are close to signing Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Dani Olmo, who has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Italian outlet Calciomercato reported that United were willing to offer €40m for the Spaniard in July, although a deal never materialised so we’re bound to question the credibility of those reports.

The 21-year-old may well have been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s list of targets but the Red Devils didn’t sign any midfielders in the transfer window, much to the dismay of supporters.

According to AS in Spain, Atletico are in pole position to sign Olmo after positive negotiations with the player’s agent Juan Manuel Lopez. They have until September 2 to get a deal over the line, whereas the transfer market for English clubs closed on August 8.

Olmo starred for the Spain at the U21 European Championships this summer, scoring three goals in six appearances and helping the team win the tournament outright.

With Solskjaer looking to fill his squad with young talent, the Dinamo ace would have been a good addition and he will only improve in the coming years as he matures.

But now it looks like the next chapter of his career could belong in Spain with Atletico, who already signed a cracking young player this summer in Joao Felix from Benfica.
