Man Utd urged to contact Matthijs De Ligt over potential £60m transfer

Manchester United have been told by Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol to make one last attempt to sign Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt.

De Ligt has been at the centre of the biggest transfer saga of the summer, with a host of European clubs all linked to the 19-year-old.

The latest comes from Sky Sports, who say Juventus have made an initial offer in the region of £58m for the Dutch centre-back, whith Ajax holding out for at least £68m.

The report claims PSG have already met Ajax’s demands for youngster, but De Ligt already has his heart set on a move to Turin.

The fee seems extraordinarily cheap for a player with the potential to be the best central defender in the world.

“One point I would make was that if I was at Manchester United now, I would be seeing what was happening with Matthijs de Ligt,” Solhekol told the Transfer Centre as quoted by the Express.

“If I’d offered £70million for Maguire who is 26, De Ligt is seven years younger.

“He’s 19 years old and looks like he could be going to Juventus for something like £50m or £60m.

“I know United have been in for De Ligt before, but is it worth having just one more go?

“Just picking up the phone and ringing Mino Raiola again.”

Solhekol is correct in suggesting De Ligt is worth far more than Maguire. The centre-back’s price is clearly inflated given he is English and Leicester have no need to sell.

However, there is no point in chasing De Ligt if he clearly does not want to move to Manchester. It seems his is set on a move to Juventus this summer, so the Reds should chase other targets to strengthen in central defence.

United would have to pay a huge fee to Leicester to secure the services of Maguire amid reported interest from Man City, but there seems few options the club can actually target this summer given the shortage of available centre-backs and no Champions League qualification.
