Manchester United have confirmed they will offer Juan Mata a new contract this summer to keep him at the club, as reported by the BBC.
Mata’s current deal was set to expire at the end of this month, but the Reds have announced a new deal has been offered to keep the Spaniard at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old scored six times for the Reds last year and made two assists in 33 club appearances (whoscored).

Mata has been a good servant at Old Trafford since joining from Chelsea, but question marks remain over whether he is still effective as he once was. The Spaniard has rarely been given the chance to thrive in a number 10 role at United and has been consistently played from the right-wing, under all of United’s managers in the post Sir Alex era.
However, Solskjaer is clearly keen for Mata to stay and will give him another chance in a red shirt next season if he wants to stay at the club. Mata could also provide useful advice for new signing Daniel James. United confirmed on their website today that a deal for James has been agreed ‘in principle’ with an official announcement expected shortly.
Manchester United fans on twitter have reacted to the news of Mata’s contract offer. Many are unimpressed with the new deal and are concerned with what this means for the club’s long-term future.
Check out some reaction below:
The fact that Juan Mata has been offered a contract renewal should quell any hopes United fans have of signing De Ligt. The club is in no mood to rebuild, we are gonna make midtable our home.

Much as I like Juan Mata, @manutd should not be feeling sentimental and providing a contract extension to him. Stinks of Glazernomics, but no surprises there #GlazersWoodwardOut

🇾🇪If Juan Mata stays at #mufc and doesn't play a single minute, his contract extension will be worth it.

If Juan mata staying doesn’t affect new signings. No problem #MUFC

If we're doing this @ManUtd we may as well get David Beckham back on the field. I genuinely think he could do a better job than Juan Mata on the field. (no offence)#mufc https://t.co/kCO3u0HQ4T

“I want to have the fittest, hardest working team in the league next season. We want to sign young, hungry players with talent”
Offers Juan Mata a new deal. Utterly depressing bit of news

Thoughts on Juan Mata being offered a new contract?
For me there isn’t much of a problem with it as long as he isn’t starting not playing on RW. Good squad and rotation player but nothing more.
Need to get rid of more deadwood tho.

Horrendous sign of our lack of ambition for me. He would not be kept at any other top club but its decisions like that that price we are no longer a top club.

Speaks volumes that united are only now giving Mata a new contract weeks before its due to expire. I think this translates into we have tried to buy Bruno fernandes , Tielemans and celso but they have all said no! #Mata #juanmata #ManchesterUnited #manunited
