Virgil van Dijk believes Manchester United need to do themselves a favour by beating Manchester City on Wednesday night after Sunday’s shocker against Everton.
Make no mistake about it, United lost ground on finishing in the top four last weekend. Crystal Palace’s win over Arsenal meant a win over the Toffees would have put the Reds in a much stronger position than they are now.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men need to deliver a far better display against their rivals to keep Champions League hopes alive after crashing out of the competition last week following a thrashing against Barcelona.

Wednesday night will see City play their game in hand on Liverpool, who are currently two points clear following Sunday’s 2-0 win over Cardiff City. But the Premier League wouldn’t be as entertaining if there wasn’t a twist, with that game against United, building up the Manchester derby not that they need to when a title is on the line.
Van Dijk was asked whether Liverpool are relying on United doing them a favour. He replied: ‘They need to do themselves a favour,’ the Netherlands defender said, as quoted by The Metro. ‘They need to do themselves a favour. Everton is not easy to beat at home, but 4-0 is a big result.
‘We have no influence on that, but they are still playing for Champions League football and they need to get a result.’
Reds can debate on what outcome they want on Wednesday night, but Van Dijk doesn’t say much wrong here.
Obviously, I’d pick anything over Liverpool winning the league, but my biggest concern is United – the only football club I give a shit about.
I’ve never wanted to see United lose a football match and the thought of wanting that is just weird. To me, at least.
Best outcome: United hammer City and clinch a top four finish, while Liverpool lose all of their remaining games.
