Man Utd handed boost to sign Roma’s Kostas Manolas in cut-price deal – reports in Italy

According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Manchester United have been handed a transfer boost to sign AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas.

The 27-year-old will be fondly remembered for his late winner to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League quarter-finals last season. The same we’ll be expecting from maybe Phil Jones at Camp Nou in April…

Roma know they are likely to lose the centre-back if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, and they’re currently in 5th place 4 points adrift of AC Milan.

Failure to secure Champions League football will reportedly see Manolas available in the transfer market for €36 million, as reported by Calciomercato, giving any potential suitor a huge boost in their pursuit of the Greece international.

He would be a good solution to our defensive problems but Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Kouilbaly would be more appealing to most United fans.

As things stand, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof are United’s main two centre-backs and many still feel the former isn’t quite good enough for this level.

Smalling could prove to be a good squad player but the club shouldn’t be fooled by the odd stand out performance. He has been given chance after chance down the years and it’s time to get some quality in.
