Man Utd plan scouting mission on Sunday to watch highly-rated Serie A defender

Fabrizio Romano from The Guardian claims Manchester United will send a scout to Bologna vs Fiorentina on Sunday, as the club weighs up a move for Nikola Milenkovic.

The Fiorentina centre-back can also play at right-back and Jose Mourinho likes players who are versatile, though fans are likely to be more concerned about the heart of defence right now.

Aged 21, Milenkovic is also attracting interest from Juventus and Bayern Munich, as per Calciomercato, so the race for his signature is already heating up.

The Guardian’s report claims Milenkovic was the subject of a €45 million offer by Atletico Madrid last summer, which was rejected by his current club. That suggests they’re not prepared to let him leave on the cheap.

However, The Guardian states he earned around £10,000 a week at Fiorentina, with a contract running till 2022. The Reds could easily afford to pay him a higher salary, so it will be interesting to see how he performs on Sunday as prizing him away shouldn’t be too difficult.

Milenkovic becomes the second Serbia international to be strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months. The past summer saw the club constantly linked with signing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, as per Goal.

We’ve not seen much of Milenkovic to really comment, though watching Chris Smalling start most weeks at in defence would have you excited at the prospect of signing any defender out there.

Yet Sky Sports claim Smalling and United have began talks about a new contract.

Keeping players like United will only keep us in mediocrity mode. He’s not kicked on like some thought he would and isn’t good enough to be playing for a top team — something United need to become again one day.
