Spurs want £30m-rated Man Utd man; Arsenal also tracking gifted defender

Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly could replace Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld, according to reports.

Alderweireld was on United’s radar over the summer as manager Jose Mourinho sought to add an established defender to his ranks.

However, Mourinho was left frustrated as he missed out on the Belgian and many other centre-back alternatives, with the club’s vice executive-chairman not quite delivering and too much with new sponsorship deals.

As far as Bailly is concerned, the Ivory Coast international has struggled to convince Mourinho of his abilities this term. He was hooked off just 17 minutes into the comeback win over Newcastle when United were trailing 2-0.

The Daily Star claims the Reds will look to recoup as much of the £30 million that was spent to bring him to the Premier League from Villarreal in 2016 as Mourinho’s first signing at the club.

The report suggests Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of Bailly and that Mourinho could perhaps use the player as bait to persuade Alderweireld to join.

It is also believed, as per The Express, that Arsenal are tracking Bailly’s situation.

Both Pochettino and Unai Emery are aware of Bailly from their time coaching in Spain.
