Paul Merson slams Newcastle ahead of Man Utd encounter

Paul Merson is predicting that Manchester United will beat Newcastle 2-0 at the weekend and has offered his assessment of both clubs.

The Sky Sports pundit talks about how easy it has been for teams to win at St. James’ Park, even though the game is at Old Trafford.

Merson also highlights Newcastle’s total lack of attacking threat which should swing in our favour because Jose Mourinho’s defence has been anything but convincing this season.

“I watched Newcastle the other day against Leicester and I couldn’t believe what I was watching,” Merson wrote in his prediction segment for Sky Sports.

“I’ve played at St. James’ Park plenty of times and it was a hard place to play football. The players were up for it, the crowd were up for it and it was a hard game.

“They have just one shot on target from 65 yards from Jonjo Shelvey. If Manchester United could hand pick any team to play this weekend it would be Newcastle.

“Forget Cardiff or Huddersfield, it would be Newcastle because they can’t score a goal. They don’t even look like scoring a goal.

“On the flip side, if United don’t win this game there’ll be major trouble at Old Trafford. Newcastle will go there for a 0-0 but United will eventually break them down.”

This might make for pleasant reading but United cannot afford to get complacent.

We have pissed away far too many winnable games already this season and show zero signs of learning from our mistakes.

If United drop more points on Saturday, Mourinho will be lucky to keep the job beyond the international break.

Meanwhile, with Liverpool hosting Premier League champions Manchester City, Merson is predicting a 2-1 win for Pep Guardiola’s men, which would see the Scousers lose their first league game of the season.

We’ll leave you with a cringeworthy tweet from some Liverpool fan…
