‘Mike Maldini’ – Reactions to Smalling’s stunning performance vs Watford

Plenty of Manchester United fans have been reacting to Saturday’s win at Vicarage Road over Watford and the vast majority of them are delighted with the stand-out performance of Chris Smalling.

The Reds were supposedly on the verge of crisis mode just a few weeks ago, but Jose Mourinho’s side have now picked up back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

The defence so far this season has been far from convincing, but the defence was good versus Watford, particularly Smalling.

Romelu Lukaku gave the visitors the lead after an inviting cross from Ashley Young and Smalling finished a wonderful corner routine – straight from the training ground – like a fully developed striker minutes later.

The England international has taken loads of flak over the last couple of seasons, but modelling a horrendous hairstyle he looked a new signing. Performance wise too!

The 28-year-old will be difficult to budge from the starting line-up following a performance of that level, but he needs to do it on a consistent basis to keep Mourinho and fans alike happy. If he can do that, the boss may think twice about spending big money on a centre-back in January or next summer.
