Blow for Man Utd as European rivals prepare to meet target’s release clause

Juventus are reportedly set to meet the release clause of Lazio star and Manchester United transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The Serbia international has long been linked with a move to United, with a recent report even suggesting a £80 million deal was in place for him to move to Old Trafford.

However, it now looks like Serie A champions Juventus have moved ahead of United in the running as Milinkovic-Savic’s father persuades him to remain in Italy.

On top of that, Juventus chiefs have apparently promised manager Massimiliano Allegri that if he stayed this summer they’d spend big in the transfer market to bolster his squad.

According to Tuttosport, this now means paying the £87.5 million release clause of Milinkovic-Savic and beating United to his signature.

The Reds could do with another midfield signing this summer, especially if Marouane Fellaini leaves on a free transfer at the end of the month.

Milinkovic-Savic would offer a similar aerial presence as Fellaini but is much agiler and more comfortable in possession. His creative spark, along with Paul Pogba, would offer great excitement at Old Trafford — something we’ve lacked since the Ferguson years.

Let’s see how this one plays out.
