Manchester United are unwilling to match Tottenham Hotspur’s demands for Toby Alderweireld and will walk away from the deal unless a compromise can be reached.
The Belgium international is away on international duty and it looks unlikely a deal will be agreed on before the World Cup kicks off this week, so United and the player will be made until their campaign concludes.
However, United will look to alternatives unless Spurs lower their asking price for the 29-year-old, who didn’t play much football this past year.

The Independent understands that United’s bid for Alderweireld, rumoured to be in the region of £55 million, falls short of Spurs’ valuation.
That’s plenty to spend on defender more than likely past his best — but he’d still add plenty to our defence.

Liverpool paid Southampton £75 million for Virgil van Dijk in January and it is thought Spur was a similar amount for the defender.
