Athletic Bilbao are hoping to re-sign Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera and are even willing to make him their highest-paid player to do so, according to Spanish newspaper Diario AS, as per 101 Great Goals.

With the Spaniard’s contract originally due to expire this summer, Bilbao had planned to take advantage by making Herrera their highest-earner, however, United moved quickly to extend his contract by an additional year.

Herrera, who joined United from Bilbao in 2014 for over £30 million, could see his game time reduced next season following the signing of Brazil international Fred.

The 28-year-old has gone on to make 161 appearances for the Reds and, during that time, has claimed honours such as the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League.

Bilbao are now interested in the midfielder returning. The same report suggests United officials will listen to offers, although Jose Mourinho wants a replacement identified first.

United have already lost Michael Carrick to retirement and could see Fellaini leave on a free next month.
