The last term was a struggle for the France international despite arriving at United in such promising form in 2015 as a prospect that looked set to take on the world.

Since then, Mourinho hasn’t appeared to enjoy his football under Jose Mourinho.

The Daily Mail believe United will look to recoup as much as possible of the total of £58 million they paid Monaco for him as talks are allegedly planned with Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino is said to have identified Martial as a key target as he has as much as £100 million to spend this summer. The anit-Mourinho brigade will argue that the Frenchman will develop and excel better under the Argentine coach.

United may well regret letting him go if he does fulfill his potential, with fans likely to be worried about Mourinho repeating the mistake of letting Kevin De Bruyne go during his time as a youngster at Chelsea.

De Bruyne has since gone on to shine for Manchester City.
