Transfer Update: Toby Alderweireld to Man Utd reports rubbished by journalist

According to a report from Tottenham correspondent Alisdair Gold this afternoon, the rumours claiming that Manchester United and Spurs are currently locked in negotiations over Toby Alderweireld are false.

The 28-year-old has been a Tottenham player since making the move to London from Atketico Madrid in 2015.

Alderweireld has caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs with his stellar performances during a loan spell with Southampton during the 2014-15 campaign, with Tottenham eventually paying out £12 million for his services the following summer.

However, Spurs’ attempts to tie their star defender down to a new contract have proven unfruitful, with little to no progress reported to this point.

Alderweireld’s current Tottenham contract is set to expire in the summer of 2019, though his deal contains an option for a further year, which could make the situation slightly problematic.

But the proposed extension would see the Belgium international’s release clause drop to just £25 million. Daniel Levy won’t want that to happen as Alderweireld is worth a lot more than that amount in today’s transfer market.

United have been one of many European giants linked with a move for Alderweireld, but Alisdair Gold of Football.London says otherwise…
