Man Utd legend calls on Jose Mourinho to change approach and entertain the fans

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has called on his club’s flair players to offer more in attacking sense next season.

Fans will agree that United should be better going forward, especially with the personnel available, but some will always lay the blame on manager Jose Mourinho for being too conservative in his approach.

Mourinho expects his attacking players to carry out defensive duties as much as his players in midfield, and that often leaves United looking light in attack.

You could put it down to a safety-first approach, but how safe is it if United finished the season trophyless?

Giggs wants Mourinho to remove the shackles off the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in an attempt to entertain the fans.

Speaking to ESPN, Giggs said: “First of all, I was a Manchester United fan [growing up]. I used to climb over the fence when I was a seven, eight-year-old, get the match bus to Old Trafford.

“Right from when I can remember, I used to go to Old Trafford and then, fast-forward to 17, 18, I played for the first team. I understand how the club works, what the fans want because I was a fan.

“I was also a player who wanted to excite the crowd, to get the fans on their feet. I want to see exciting players. I want to see Rashford, I want to see Martial, I want to see Pogba try things. That’s what I tried to do when I was playing.”

United scored 38 goals fewer than Manchester City in the Premier League last term. If we want to compete with the best, that’s a bridge that needs to be gapped. Our approach needs to change – even to the way it was at the beginning of 2017/18 when the Reds were scoring goals against teams for fun.
