Manchester United legend first, Wales manager second.

Ryan Giggs has more than one reason for wanting his star man to be on the winning side in Kiev on Saturday night.

Giggs admits it is tough seeing his former side’s bitter rivals Liverpool reach the prestigious Champions League final.

Real Madrid face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool with the Champions League trophy on the line, and it remains uncertain whether Gareth Bale will start for Los Blancos on the night.

Asked if he’d prefer the La Liga giants to come out on top this weekend, the United legend said, as per the Mirror: “I shouldn’t say this, but I hope so.

“As a United fan, and playing for United for so long, Liverpool were our main rivals, and they were our main rivals for a reason — they’ve got great history and they’re a brilliant club.

“It’s hard watching them in finals, but if you forget about the Liverpool aspect for a second, it would be magnificent for Gareth to win the Champions League four times. It would be unbelievable.”

Zinedine Zidane has often preferred Marco Asensio to the former Tottenham Hotspur man this season, even Isco has topped the pecking order which has seen Bale pushed further down.

This has fuelled talk of a Premier League club, with Sky Sports jumping in on the act, but Giggs believes Madrid can still rely on his star man.

“Every time Gareth plays he makes an impact,” he continued.

“It just shows the professional he is that he’s not sulking. He’s a top player, one of the best in the world.

“Every time he comes on to the pitch he makes a difference. He will be thinking if he starts in the Champions League final, ‘Great!’ If he doesn’t then, ‘I’m ready to score that winner.”

That’s a great attitude to have and one many of our youngsters could learn from.

Still, I’m sure I would take Bale at United now. A year or two ago, definitely.
