Man Utd have made phone calls regarding £40m defender

Manchester United are expected to sign another centre-back this summer and, as a result, have been linked with every defender across Europe.

No joke. Every day we’re presented with headlines and I have lost count of the amount of centre backs and full-backs rumoured to be joining the Reds. Surely one has to be accurate, right?

Eric Bailly is bizarrely no longer considered a regular despite being the best defender in the squad, while Chris Smalling and Phil Jones continue to be selected, yet are nowhere near good enough. Victor Lindelof is slowly but surely settling into life in England, therefore, I’m happy to give him another year or two to prove himself at the top.

However, there is one proven Premier League centre-back reportedly on United’s radar this summer. Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld faces an uncertain future in North London and only has 12 months remaining on his contract. Spurs can extend it by a further 12 months, which would also trigger a £25 million buyout clause.

It would be wise for Mauricio Pochettino to cash in this summer but I’m saying that with a clear objective, so you can take that with a pinch of salt.

That said, the ever-reliable Belgium journalist Kristof Terrur is reporting that we have made phone calls over the possibility of signing the 29-year-old.

Alderweireld is considered one of the top centre-backs in the Premier Legaue over the past three seasons, though was limited to just 14 appearances this season due to injuries.

Terruer confirmed that we have shown an interest in the Spurs defender, speaking to the Transfer Talk podcast:

“Man United are looking for a defender.

“They have made some phone calls about him [Alderweireld]. They have made an offer yet.

“I wonder if Spurs want to do business with a direct competitor.”

The Daily Mail reported last week that United could sign Alderweirled for £40 million this summer.
