Paul Pogba winning over Mourinho and sounding like a true Man Utd player at last

Paul Pogba has been crowned Manchester United’s player of the month for April, beating fellow midfielder Ander Herrera and Alexis Sanchez to the accolade. The Frenchman registered three goals, including two famous strikes against City, and two assists.

He was unequivocal in his answer when asked what his standout moment was last month. He told MUTV: ‘I would definitely say City is the best memory, even if they did win the league’.

Pogba is starting to put a few ropey months behind him and has set out his desire for the rest of the season: ‘The most important thing for me is I would like us to finish second and to win the FA Cup, that would be great for everyone’.

In an interview that appears to bury the hatchet with Jose Mourinho, Pogba has been reflecting on his second season and the added responsibility within it: ‘It’s good that the manager believes in you and the players. It’s an honour to wear the captain’s armband and just to wear the shirt and play at Old Trafford. I was here in the academy and, for me, it was a dream to play in the first team and I did it, so yeah, I’m very proud’.

There was a time not too long ago, first half against City to be precise, when I was more than happy to see United cut their ties with Pogba for a second time. Since that fannying around in his own half and ambling back, we have seen a much improved, more effective Pogba.

For all the rumblings of a fallout between him and Mourinho, this does not sound like a man who is a) disillusioned or b) looking to get away.

There is no doubting his abilities, he just needs to take his game to the David Silva/De Bruyne levels. Not Fernandinho, Mr Crooks.

But at least he is talking like a Manchester United player should.

United will need Pogba to stand up if they are to get close to City next season.

It sounds like he wants to be here and accept and embrace that challenge.
