Manchester United and Liverpool to engage in transfer battle for €45m midfielder

Reports suggest both Manchester United and Liverpool are considering a potential transfer for Roma and Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman this summer.

The same story, as per Tuttosport, but translated by Calciomercato, suggests Strootman is also becoming a top target for Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Strootman was tipped to become a world class midfielder from a young age, although a series of serious injuries have somewhat stalled his development as a player.

That said, Strootman is still clearly considered by many clubs as an addition that would improve their current squads, if reports are to be believed.

United will lose Michael Carrick at the end of the season through retirement, leaving manager Jose Mourinho without any depth behind Nemanja Matic. The Manager’s POTY Scott McTominay doesn’t appear to be a player of the same mould but should still be given first-team opportunities next season.

Liverpool, on the other hand, face the departure of Emre Can on a free with Juventus sniffing around the German, as per the Liverpool Echo.

Our friends at Calciomercato also seem to believe Strootman has a release clause of just €45 million, which is well within United’s budget. Liverpool should have a hefty transfer kitty, too, from all that Champions League TV money.
