Preview: Everton v United

Manchester United will kick off their Premier League season tonight when they travel to Goodison Park before facing Everton. Sir Alex Ferguson may have wished for an easier start, but it’s probably best to get a tough fixture like this out of the way as soon as possible.

Everton
The Toffees ended last season on a high finishing a place above their neighbours Liverpool, who probably think ‘it’s their year’ again. David Moyes was expected to make most out of little funds in the transfer market, but will probably still give everybody in the league a run for their money when it comes to match day.

The Merseyside club re-signed Steven Pienaar from Tottenham Hotspur after the South African suffered a poor spell in London. They also acquired the services of Steven Naismith from Rangers on a free transfer. However, the sale of Jack Rodwell to Manchester City should give Moyes a sum of money to spend on either a replacement or goalscorer, something Everton are arguably short of.

Last season Everton came back from 3-1 at Old Trafford in a game that finished 4-4. That was arguably the most disappointing game of the 2011/12 campaign for Reds because it’s where a lot of fans believe we lost the title to City, who were beaten by Everton thanks to a smashing Darren Gibson strike.

Manchester United
It was shaping up to be a disappointing summer for United until the club finally made a marque signing. With no disrespect intended towards Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, who I believe are two excellent signings, missing out on a number big names such as Eden Hazard and Lucas Moura gave fans a good reason to be concerned with the likes of Chelsea improving immensely after winning the European Cup.

Signing Robin van Persie was a magnificent response from United after being snubbed by Lucas Moura, who preferred how big his wallet would look joining Paris St-Germain. The Dutch striker will have a positive impact on our squad and his determination might teach our youth players a lesson or two.

Ferguson will be hoping Manchester United can keep Tom Cleverley and Nemanja Vidic fit for the entire season. The midfield position especially has come in for strong criticism, therefore, Cleverley has a lot to prove after an injury-riddled 2011/12 campaign.

There has been a lot of talk about what formation Fergie will use this season with additions such as Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie. However at Goodison I suspect Fergie to start Kagawa in a free role behind Rooney. It was also confirmed that RVP will make his debut, which will more than likely come from the bench.
