Valencia given historic No.7 shirt

It has been confirmed that Antonio Valencia will wear the number 7 shirt next season as a result of Michael Owen’s departure, following the footsteps of legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best. Suddenly, the number feels magnificent again now that someone worthy will be wearing it.

It was reported shortly after that Valencia had requested the shirt. If that’s the case, it shows how determined he is and proud to be a Red. He was awarded Player of the Year last year at the club and many supporters started campaigns on Twitter to show how much they believed he deserved the historic squad number. It wasn’t rocket science to sense Owen wasn’t worthy of being in the squad, never mind wear a shirt that means so much.

“I take the shirt with pride, but also with humility,” said Valencia. “The number 7 is very special. In recent years, few players have worn it. When I received the call I did not hesitate to say yes, I wanted the shirt. I just want to keep playing and keep giving joy to the people of Ecuador and Manchester.”

Valencia took it to Twitter also to show his excitement after being granted the new squad number, by saying: “I humbly accept the historic #7. Will do my best. Thanks to God, my family, ManUtd and all the fans for believing in me!”

The news certainly excites me. Tony V will cherish the shirt and that’s what it’s all about. Since arriving at Old Trafford in 2009, the same summer Ronaldo left, Valencia has kept his head down and worked hard proving to be a real nightmare for defenders with his direct and incessant runs, and his powerful physical attributes.
